this is the river in salamanca. in the 14th century they used to banish all the prosititutes from the city during the 40 days of lent. they would take them across the river to a camp on the other side. then, when easter finally rolled around, the 40 000 horny students would get drunk and row across to practise their bacchanalian skills. that's why it's called 'good' friday, and if it's not, it should be.
